This blind lady called the phone company and asked for a braille caller i d. After a few minutes of putting her on hold, they came back and said, "I'm sorry, we don't have it in that collor."
LOL! I gotta tell that one at work! I've heard from someone, I forget who, but there was a topic on some blindness forum about stupid things sighted people say to us and one said "I know you can read braille, but can you speak braille?"
I've gotten the do you speak braille question many times also, but I've also gotten the question do you speak sign since I took a couple of classes on it. People are just stupid sometimes.
In elementary school, I was frequently asked if I could speak Braille.
Lol I've never been asked yet if I can speak braille, but I sure had strange conversations with customer services people of different companies ETC. in fact just recently when I had some problems/delays of recieving braill statements from my bank, I called to ask about it, the person on the other end had no idea what I was talking about and had to transfer me to their supervisor...I mean braille statements is something what this bank offered for years, so this customer rep obviously either hasn't been trained properlly or is just stupid, or prob both, as It seems to be happening so more and more often with companies.
I get stereotyped a lot. I have some sight, but I'm always asked if I need any alternate Braille materials. I think one time I said yes and looked at the Braille dots with my eyes, cheated, and read by sight!
well this kinda reminds me of another storry...when I was about 7, my family went for a dinner to some friend's house, as I recently started going to school, had braille books ETC. my mom asked me to bring one of the books with me so we can show to shese people what it looks like, so after dinner we were chatting and I was asked to read something just to show them. After that, their 6 year old son took my book, closed his eyes, run his fingers over the braill text and asked: "how come I can't read this?"
